Welcome to Carmel Chess Club (CCC)!
The goal of this club is to provide a nurturing environment for children to play chess at a competitive level. Students will analyze games played in the club and critique each players' evaluation, calculation and planning processes. This will sharpen their chess thinking method and hone their chess playing skills to become a successful tournament player.
Students can register for classes listed below based on their individual playing strengths.
Class Descriptions:
A. Lesson Group: Beginning chess players let's build a solid chess foundation by learning the basic skills: piece values, moves, and tactics. Chess notation and opening principles are taught to build a framework to improve your playing abilities. Students learn life-long skills such as thinking for themselves, problem solving and social interaction. Students learn that losing is okay as long as they remember the Japanese proverb "Fall down seven times, get up eight". Students learn to keep learning and keep playing your best. Best of all - have fun! (Chess Rating 0 - 599)
B. Tournament Group: Tournament chess players will learn 2 chess thinking methods: The calculation thinking method and the evaluation thinking method. Using these thinking methods, students will learn opening, middle game and endgame principles. Emphasis will be placed on how to think and make winning moves in a chess game. Tactics, strategy, and checkmating techniques will be emphasized. Tactics homework will be graded and reviewed in class. Overall, students will improve their playing skills, make new friends and have fun! (Recommended Chess Rating 600 - 1199)
C. Competitive Group: Advanced students ready to learn openings, traps, and winning methods will learn new competitive playing skills in this course. This course will be taught at a faster pace in order to maximize our class time. All the skills learned in the Lesson and Tournament Group classes will be used as we focus on openings, middle games, and endgames. Gaining and keeping the initiative will be taught. Homework is mandatory. Students are expected to actively participate, keep up with their peers, and attend classes. (Recommended Chess Rating 1200-1500)
